OFFICE OF THE PRIME MINISTER, 1145
It was a high level meeting, consisting of only the Prime Minister, and the Ministers of Resistance, Robotics, and Intelligence. Plus their morphs, which were busy supplying a steady stream of tea as their masters tried to pretend they weren't there.
“It’s bad enough,” the Minister of Resistance said slowly, once the Prime Minister had finished summarizing the situation, “that the Great and Powerful Groupmind is going to give us our guns back?”
“Temporarily,” the Groupmind’s spokesmorph replied. “They will be disabled and destroyed the moment the crisis has passed.”
“Ms. Kelly, do we have a clear picture of what sort of group is, or perhaps was, occupying the building?” the Prime Minister asked.
The Minister of Intelligence stood up, waving to life a hologram composed of a mosaic of human faces, made of the files of the building’s inhabitants. “As the Groupmind told us, they are a collection of violent anti-collaborationists. Anyone trying to conduct themselves in a normal manner or working peacefully with a morph is worthy of death, in their philosophy.” A corner of the mosaic was ringed in red, separating it from the main the group to hover to one side, making up about fifty people. “What is probably the core of the group is composed of ex-Spetsnaz commandos, from the Lost Czarist Republic and Lost People’s Democratic Russia.” A second, smaller group was ringed in blue and also separated. “These are individuals that were part of the NATO Combined Artificial Intelligence Defense Group that was created during the early days of the Rebellion. So there’s a good chance whatever prompted the start of this morning’s incident was caused by them.”
“What about the rest of them?” the Minister of Resistance asked.
“Civilians for the most part, mostly dependents or relatives of the two core groups, or sympathizers with their cause.” Intelligence paused, then added, “There are also about three hundred children under the age of fifteen.”
The Minister of Resistance blew out his breath. “Right, so we’ve got some hardcore commando trained fanatics on one side, and on the other boffins that were smart enough to fool the damned Groupmind long enough to do something that made at least some of their morph go haywire. Plus the rest of them, some with various levels of rusty military training, And they’re all holed up in a single building with barricaded entrances. Wonderful.”
