Kickstarting a New Audiobook
Jul. 19th, 2018 10:48 am Or at least strongly considering one. Since publishing The Complete Red Vixen Adventures last year, I've been wanting to do another Kickstarter to fund an audiobook edition like Captive of the Red Vixen.
The downside is that it would be a much more expensive project. Captive was only a 112 pages, working out to about 4 1/2 hours of narration, which I got for cheap at $100 an hour. Doing an audiobook of the full CRVA would be about 24 hours of audio for 625 pages, and to get a narrator for a project so large would require more like $200 per hour. So instead of a modest $500 Kickstarter, this project would require closer to $5,000.
Ouch.
On the plus side since I have a CafePress shop now I could offer physical goodies like t-shirts and mugs to Kickstarter supporters, along with signed copies of the dead tree edition. So there's that.
So does this sound like a good idea, or just more pie in the sky?
Update on the Kickstarter. After a banner weekend that brought us to $91 and 81% of our goal, we've been in the doldrums for the past couple of days. It's so close I can taste it though....
Update: $25 pledge this morning, bringing us to $516 and 86% of our goal. Eeeeeeeee......
( In which Melanie points out some things Rolas would rather not think too hard about. )

Kickstarter Update
Jul. 27th, 2014 04:49 amA very busy weekend so far. Just in the past two days there have been almost $300 worth of pledges, which amazed me. I expected some bucks to be thrown in the hat from friends and family, but the number of complete strangers that are contributing is blowing my mind. At this point it's not a question of completing funding, it's how many of the other books with be made into audiobooks as well.

Kickstarter Update
Jul. 23rd, 2014 04:50 amOne week into the campaign and I've managed to raise $206 out of the $600 I need. After the initial excitement of seeing the numbers go up, we're in the Long Game now. Monday I didn't get any donations and yesterday I got just $5.00. At this point I'm going to HAVE to get an average of $17.00 a day to meet my goal.
Keep your fingers crossed, and please spread the word.

Kickstarter Update
Jul. 18th, 2014 04:31 amTwo days in and we're 24% funded. WooHoo! Keep it up guys! I just need $16 worth of pledges a day at this point to make goal, but I need y'all to make it happen!
My only nitpick at this point is figuring out who is sharing the campaign with others on FB. It's been shared twenty times, which is great, but I've got no idea of knowing who's doing it to thank them.

Update on the CotRV Audiobook Project
Jun. 29th, 2014 10:24 pmSo this morning I cut a script and posted it to ACX, for a rate of $50 to $100 per hour, not really expecting any takers right away.
This evening I got an audition from Daniel Dorse whom I've heard before doing M.C.A. Hogarth's "Kerishdar" stories. Who is really, really good. If I can get a Kickstarter going to meet his rate, the book is going to be fantastic.

Poll: Kickstarter Goals
Jun. 28th, 2014 10:58 amSo, as I mentioned in my last post I'm listening to M.C.A. Hogarth's From Spark to Finish: Running Your Kickstarter Campaign, which has good advice for setting realistic goals for your campaign and also figuring out appropriate (and affordable) donation gifts.
What I need to do first is figure out how much the whole project is going to cost. I'm figuring a minimum of $1500 for a 90 page novella, though I'm likely low balling that. First I need to set up a script for the narrator auditions and get their offers. After that, I have to figure what rewards and stretch goals to offer backers. Unfortunately I'm a writer not an artist like
haikujaguar, so the rewards I can offer are limited, but I've got a few ideas.
Preliminary Reward Ideas
$1.00 - Follower! No reward, just the chance to follow the campaign.
$5.00 - Honorable Mention. Have your name read off at the end of the book.
$10.00 - Icon! An original social media icon created by one of my artist friends, probably featuring Melanie in her Red Vixen persona giving a thumbs up sign or something equally silly.
$15.00 - Hand signed thank you note, possibly from me or the Red Vixen "herself".
$25.00 - Copy of the Audiobook.
$30.00 - Everything below and the original Kindle file.
$50.00 - Reader's pack. Audiobook and copies of all the stories in the Red Vixen Adventures series.
$100 - The Whole Works. The Audiobook and copies of all my previously published stories.
??? - Tuckerization. I'm thinking about giving three to four people a chance to have themselves show up (either as Foxen or another species) for a brief cameo in the next Red Vixen story. This is the one I'm little shaky deciding a price for, especially given it'll be a significant percentage of the overall goal.
[Poll #1973491]
Stretch Goals
Here's where things get tricky. The only real stretch goal I can think of is perhaps a more professional cover for CotRV, and further audiobooks, but given the first is going to be just a $100 to $500, and the audiobooks at least $1,500 apiece, I have to figure out some intermediate goals between them. Thoughts would be welcome.
So waddya thinks, sirs?

Audiobook Purchased
Jun. 28th, 2014 10:00 amBased on some discussion of the Liaden books I'd read recently, I've used my Audible credit to grab Rose Point the second book in
haikujaguar's Her Instruments series. [1] I also picked up her non-fiction book From Spark to Finish which was on sale, which is chock full of sensible advice for Kickstarter campaigns. It's already giving me Ideas for finally creating an audiobook version of Captive of the Red Vixen, which I'm going to post separately about.
[1] Hopefully Reese will use some of her XP from the last book to up her Wisdom score though... ;p
