She hadn't been into princesses when she was a kid. The generic sparkly, tiara wearing, vacantly smiling ideal of Disney was her idea of Hell. Her heroines had carried swords, and if they'd married the prince it was only after they had both had walked up the aisle over the bodies of their enemies.

“You look beautiful,” her mother said.

“Thanks, Mom.”

“Take a look at yourself.”

She turned to the mirror. The dress was pure white, the veil clipped to her perfectly coiffed hair, and the corset snug.

“You look like a princess!”

“Yeah.”

This reminds me of my first wedding, when my mother and I shopped high and low for a proper dress. I hated all of them because they were too froofy, and my sister ended up making a very simple dress for me.

My second wedding was just the two of us in front of a judge, and I very sensibly wore corduroys and a plaid shirt [g].
