So I pick up Tom last night from daycare and find out he'd just started running a mild (100.5) fever. I get him home, give him a little liquid asprin and run him a cool bath. That perks him up for just about an hour but he was conked out by 7pm.

[livejournal.com profile] moonshadowed got home about 9:30pm and I crawled into bed, to be woken up at 1am when a reinvigorated Tom woke up and asked for another cool bath. Since his fever was up to 101 now I gave in and gave him one, then clumped downstairs to keep and eye on him as he played Gran Turismo while I tried to snooze a bit on the couch. Around 4am he said he was tired (ha!) so I let go up and cuddle with Mom, except that he was so they both went downstairs while I caught another couple of hours sleep.

We switched off again at 6am, Tracy napping until 7am when I had to get cleaned up and ready for work. Fortunately Tom really was tired at this point, so by the time I left to drop off Georgia at daycare at 7:30 they were both asleep again.

Best part is that I have to watch them by myself this evening because Tracy needs to at least go in for her evening shift at the library since they're running a program tonight.

So I got the news before lunch that we have to take 40 hours of mandatory unpaid leave this quarter and another the next quarter. This quarter I'm covered. I was already going to take five days off for a vacation at the end of August. I've got the time so I'll still be paid. But now I have to find another five days to take off between 9/1 and 12/1. The only bright spot is that I don't have to take them all at once.

This is turning into one of Those Days.

Had this High Concept pop into my head over lunch. Might give this a try for this year's NanoWriMo. Or if not, I might take it slow and then try and get an agent's attention with it.

Warbird

Air Force Captain Alexandria Wing-Davis is caught between several worlds.

As a Chinese born American, she has only fading memories of the country of her birth, growing up in a United States that's both hostile and fearful of China's growing superpower status.

As a USAF combat pilot she's never flown an aircraft into the heat of battle, only guided drones to drop their payloads on targets half a world away.

As a NASA astronaut, she's only flown in space aboard Russian rockets, as NASA's prestige continues to slip along with the possibility of it ever re-developing a manned space vehicle again.

Now she finds herself in a desperate race to revive a secret military Space Shuttle, as a military coup in China results in the launch of an armed space platform manned by desperate fanatics, fanatics with nuclear weapons and an agenda to halt China's slide into openness and liberalization. Soon Alexandria is in the fight of her life to pilot the USAF Intrepid towards the rogue platform in an attempt to stop it before it can plunge the world into World War III.

If only he'd been addicted to lattes instead of cigarettes...

Teal shaded her eyes against the bright sun, as the other dragon's Companion walked carefully along his patron's outstretched, razor sharp, metallic, and surely screamingly hot scales, stepping lightly with bare feet, the knife extended in front of him.

"Dragon," she asked her own patron, "what is he do... Oh, by the Lifebringer!" The Companion pressed the knife between a pair of scales. There was a nasty squealing sound and he removed the blade, a wiggling, pale, maggot like creature the size of a hedgehog impaled upon it. He shook it off and landed on the ground with a sickly squelch. "What is that?"

A parasite common to this warm latitude, he replied.

"Why is he the one that has to hunt those things?"

Who else would a dragon trust to come so close with a weapon?

For once, Teal was very glad for Cymry's terrible weather.
