Would somebody please tell me why I can't seem to download Quicktime for my machine at home? I click on the download button and my computer keeps asking me if I want to open the damned thing up as a Word file.

Download button on the website, or the Quicktime Installer?

Download button. It just sits there when it say "getting ready to download, click HERE if nothing happens." And when I click THERE I get the message asking if I want to open it as a Word doc.

and if you just mouseover the link, does it have a file extension on the end of whatever it points to? Try renaming whatever downloads to .exe, maybe your word associations are corrupt.

Can you right-click THERE and select "Save As"? And get it to save a .EXE file?

I can, but it doesn't seem to do any good. If I save it, then click on it later, it drags me to some Microsoft diagnositic page in the Internet.

Hmm, one thing I have seen is that the file is tagged exe.php Does that mean anything in particular?

Ouch!

I hate those download links! They aren't serving up the link - they're serving a pointer to an active page that serves the link. I.e., there's this (IMAO, totally unnecessary, and actively obnoxious) extra level of redirection in their download process.

Hmm, I wonder ...

Mrfl, mrfl - they've done away with the ftp site they used to have, and the only Windows Installer I could find is one of those nifty little 'download me, and then I'll find out what you need' things.

I believe something is screwed up with the .PHP association on your system - the handler should be Internet Explorer, and has apparently been set to Word. If you want to play with File Associations, I could give you some hints on what to look for.

Um....sounds like it's *windows* that can't figure out what to do with a perfectly normal file....

I've installed Quicktime on probably a dozen PCs without ever running into that problem. Are you sure you've selected a Windows version?

Yep. I'm running Windows XP at home, and that's what I ask to download. [shrug] I guess if I want to watch the Sky Captain trailer with sound, I'll just have t odo it at your place on Friday.
