So the first photo of the new Enterprise is here. (click on the rest of the gallery to see pics of the cast in their uniforms and a glimpse of the bridge)

"Thank you, Mr. Chekhov"

First impression: Yech. While the intent was obviously an amalgam of the TOS and the movie series Enterprise, the result looks like that was done with notes from the producer to "Add some bits to it!" The saucer section looks nice (it's hard to screw that up) but the nacelles are ugly as sin and the secondary hull just looks wierd trying to support their odd mass.

The rest of the photos are not particularly encouraging. The cast looks all right, but TOS Era But Not uniforms are a bit jarring and the bridge looks like a rejected design for the one from Galaxy Quest. If I wanted to look at plexiglass circuit panels I'd turn Stargate: Atlantis on.

I had almost the opposite reaction. I love the classic Enterprise look but this reminds me strongly of the one in the movies -- and I like that a lot. And I don't find the uniforms jarring.

I tend to agree about the bridge set being a big departure....but on the other hand, there is no way that a new audience today would relate to the boxy, radio-shack look of the old school bridge -- and no way that THAT bridge would grow logically from today's design aesthetic.

As for the rest...I think I can approach it with an open enough mind.

I would have preferred that the bridge look something like from ST: Enterprise, which had some of the trappings of the TOS bridge (like the science station Viewmaster) combined with the a 21st century asthetic. I guess all that breakable plexiglass got to me.

I'm half wondering if all of this is a setup. We know the plot involves time travel and that Leonard Nimoy is making a cameo, so it would be perfectly, er, logical for them to change the timestream a bit so that in the end the Enterprise ends up looking more like the TOS version.

Oh I totally love Zachary Quinto as Spock! I hadent seen any crew photo's yet... I am happy to see however that I was lied to and that Kirk is in fact not being played by Matt Daemon as people kept telling me. When someone told me that I was like D:< "What? no..."

Damon was one of those rumored to have been asked, along with Adrian Byrne for Spock and Gary Sinise for McCoy, about a year ago. I wish they'd got Sinise. Nothing against Urban, but Sinise'd look a lot more like Kelley than Urban does and I'm familiar enough with Sinise's work to know he'd do the part beautifully.

I rather like the new ship design -- it's got a lot of curves, which is fine, and I see what they did with the nacelles -- which is make the Bussard Ramscoops a bit more obvious. Midn you, with the nacelle nose reflecting the TOS design, the units do look a little bit like fancy LED flashlights (Dayton Ward says they look like a hairdryer he had in the 1980s.)

I like the uniform updates, although I look a bit askance at the miniskirts on the women (and I'll be highly amused if there's an occasional skort seen on the men), although I can handwave it as an indicator that Starfleet is not a military organization (yeah, right.) The bridge...hm, not a fan. Again, non-military, so maybe acceptable.

I can see some blowups over using Romulans so extensively in this film -- there's going to be weeping and gnashing over "Bird Of Prey" I think. Abrams and company can always handwave it by blaming ST: Enterprise for fucking up continuity though.

My main point of dubious intent here is actually Abrams and the screenwriters. They none of them give me cause to expect greatness. Still, it's gotta be better than STV: The Final Insult.

The miniskirts are a bit much. Even Galaxy Quest had Sigorney Weaver in a full jumpsuit (ever-lowering neckline notwithstanding). I'm sincerely hoping they aren't on the men. ST:TNG tried that during the pilot episode. The effect was... disconcerting.

Those weren't skirts on the men -- they were skorts, which are shorts outfits that look like skirts when the legs are together. Thatbsaid, i don't think the original Troi minidress was a skort....

The history of Trek costume design is pretty funny as it is -- whether it's the pants with built in boots (TMP) or the spandex bodysuits that led to the actors needing an assist every time nature called.

I saw male extras in "the original Troi minidress".

Thinking about it, the Troi minidress *might* have been a skort, as I know Roddenberry had insisted that some of the men be seen wearing skorts, which made it look like they were wear minidresses. That stopped after the first couple of episodes beyond the pilot as it was concluded they just looked rather silly.

And then the production office got in a lather about Teh Gay....
