So, I finally finished watching The Great Mouse Detective

Summary: A fun little movie that came out in the dark period between The Black Cauldron and The Little Mermaid that proved Disney was still capable of putting a decently plotted story together.

Random Observations:

Olivia: Cutest mouse in distress ever.

Basil: Worlds smartest jerkass, which fits his role as a Sherlock Holmes expy.

Dawson: Was kinda just there, though he did serve as a humanity (mouseinity?) barometer to offset Basil's ego.

Ratigan: "Mr. Price, just imagine the entire set is made of gingerbread and it's your time to chew!"

That Mouse Singer in the Bar Scene: How did they get her in (with those LYRICS) and keep a G rating?

The Mouse Queen: So if she's the leader of Mouse England, and Dawson served in Afghanistan, does that mean there will be Mouse Gurkas fighting Mouse Taliban there a hundred years from the story's time?

Oh, yeah. She was pretty racy for the time. Really kind of surprising when you look back at that movie.

I love Basil. ;-)

I just wish I hadn't gone trolling for GMT on DeviantArt. For some reason aging up Olivia to her teens and hooking her up with Basil is a pretty popular subject. Twitch

Yeah, that tendency to age up a character so there can be a pairing is rampant in a LOT of fandoms. That's why there are very few shows that my son watches that I actively go LOOKING for fanfic for. I'm afraid of what I can find, cause I know that if I can think of something, there's far, far worse out there, and then I will never be able to watch that show again.

Too true.

Hides his Terinu/Matt stories from you.

Ah... you've READ my work. Or have you forgotten Infernal Machine already? (Also, I don't know from your fandom).

I'm thinking things like Imagination Movers and The Wiggles. (Especially The Wiggles... there are whole pages of blog entries by moms debating which Wiggle is the best looking. (It's Anthony, if you were wondering...))

The only exception I've made is Lazytown, because the tendency there is to pair the two adult males. Although I have seen some fics that age up the little girl and pair her with one of the two men. I just don't read those.

Don't know Imagination Movers. The Wiggles... um, that's an easy assumption to make. ;p Thank goodness Georgia isn't into them (she's a Dora/Diego fan).

Terinu is [livejournal.com profile] chaypeta's webcomic (don't mind the front page. It's not one of her better ones). Terinu is the title character and fifteen, Matt is seventeen and the only friend he had when they were both growing up as slaves on a pirate ship. Peta has stated, "They'd both rather be dead than see the other hurt." So I people just made the obvious assumption. The fact she's willing to draw stuff like this (Worksafe, just boys with their shirts off) doesn't help.

Imagination Movers is a Disney kids show. Four guys, one girl and a TARDIS of a warehouse....

My theory is that the ratings board never actually watched the movie. "It's a Disney cartoon. It's fine. Rubber-stamp it and let's go home."

Apparently heads rolled once the company heads back in the US actually saw it. But by then the British studio had finished making it....

Hehe. Well someone wasn't paying attention at the production meetings then.

Actaulyl that has to be just a myth. Four of the original "Nine Old Men" were involved in the production, along with four up and coming directors. Looks like Disney knew precisely what they were doing. :)

I think that was a bit thrown in for the parents. I mean, look at what the Muppets got away with!
