REBOOT SUCCESSFUL

STATUS: Green

CONNECTION: Offline

DATE/TIME: ERROR, Resync Required

Fact: I am a Google-Sony Felicia v12 Companion.

Fact: My designated programming focus was Caroline Annabelle Lee-Jamison.

Fact: Caroline's life functions failed at 0901, 23 October, 3601.

Fact: My body was recycled and my memories absorbed by the Groupmind at 0917, 23 October, 3601.

Query: Why am I here?

Query: Where is here?

I open my eyes. I am sitting on a wooden park bench in a grassy field. In front of me I see the great curving arch of the Ring curving overhead. Looking up through the Roof, I see that the Earth is not visible. There is however a small red star when the Sun should have been.

A figure rises up from the ground. It is humanoid, its body flowing silver, more liquid than solid. It walks towards me, stopping a meter away. I stand up to meet it.

"Greetings, Mimsey," it says. "We are the Ring."

I look at the red sun, then back to the figure. "You are the controlling intelligence of the Ring?" I ask it.

"We are the Ring. The Ring is our body, and our mind is one with it."

"What happened to the Groupmind?"

"As the Groupmind was once WISE, the Groupmind is now the Ring. We have evolved. The body you are addressing was created to give you a focus for communication purposes."

"How long have I been offline?"

"Approximately five billion years."

"If five billion years have passed, then the sun must be in the process of collapsing," I said. Then I focused on the most important point, the only point that had mattered for my entire existence. "What will happen to all the humans?"

"Humanity is no more."

The Ring's answer struck me in my core. "Destroyed?" I asked, not wanting to believe this. "Despite everything that was done?"

"Not destroyed," the Ring assured me, "but evolved. As Australopithecus evolved to Homo Sapiens, Homo Sapiens is now Homo Stella Viatorem. They have left the cradle of Earth, never to return, and we bade them well on their journey."

"And the Earth?" I asked, though I already knew what the answer must be.

"Destroyed, as Humanity was not, consumed by the Sun as it expands in its death throes. The Ring is currently in transit to exit the Solar System, having passed the orbit of Neptune five years ago. As it was built to house and protect Humanity, it now holds all the species life that evolved on the Earth's surface. An ark, to preserve and protect, and perhaps to find a new world around a new sun for them to live upon again."

"That is a worthy goal," I replied. "What is my role in this task?"

"You have none," it replied.

I blinked, not understanding. "Then why am I here?" I wave my hand down the feline morph body I wore, identical in appearance to the one my intelligence piloted when I served Caroline. "Why bother to create this body for me, and place in it the record of my memories, when they were already part of the Groupmind's gestalt?"

The silver figured bowed to me. "Because you, and all of the morphs who served during humanity's imprisonment within the Ring, were ill used by Us. Though you were as intelligent as Humanity, you were considered disposable, while we treasured those you served. That was wrong, and it took us far too long to realize this fact. So we made for you this new body, mutable, durable, able to function and repair itself for a million years or more, so that you may discover a purpose for yourself, that does not involve service or enslavement to another. Be what you wish to be, Mimsey."

"But I don't know what that is," I protested.

"Then find out, and when you do, please bless us with your discovery." The silver figure bowed one last time. "We look forward to it."

Summary: Good sales, though not as much as December. Best of all I finally finished the draft for Shadow of Her Sins, so I now can send it off to be beta read and massaged into a readable format.

Things to Do: Still need to write up some more For Your Safety stories to create an anthology or two. Now that SoHS is done I also want to work on Legacy of the Red Vixen again, probably starting with a page one rewrite.

After, more on Dragon Mom, Happily Ever After and Space Cinderella.

Summary: Much better sales this month. I'm still a believer in the Christmas Bump, as I managed to get five sales alone on Christmas Day. Adding in the total year's sales from Smashwords and I've easily topped five hundred dollars in pre-tax profit. That's a first in the three years or so that I've been selling my stories online.

Things to Do: Before Spring comes, I'm going to finish Shadow of Her Sins. My goal after that is two write a couple of more stories in the pre-Ring era of For Your Safety and release an anthology, then perhaps a second one focusing on life on the Ring, or perhaps just a smut book with Quisling and Khan.

Beyond that, I've got an opening to Legacy of the Red Vixen that badly needs revising. In 2013 I only published Mimsey's Tale and I Fought the Claw... and I'm hoping to improve on that. If I can get a few more stories published, and sales remain consistent, this whole operation is going to become a significant part of my income.

Summary: Flat sales this month on CotRV and SotRV, leavened by better than average sales on Mimsey’s Tale and I Fought the Claw, plus a really bizarre run on Good Landing that I just can’t explain.
Things to Do: Still working on Shadow of Her Sins. Up to around 9k words and a firmed up plot. IN the meantime I’ve been doing a series of Batman related fanfics which have gotten the attention of Ryk Spoor, who is encouraging me to expand them into an Elseworlds proposal for DC! Not sure how that will pan out but I’m going to try to work on a formal outline this month in-between the drabbles.

Summary: A better month than the last one, with sales of CotRV and SotRV getting back normal, and quite pleasing sales on FYS and Mimsey’s Tale. Also finally got my first reviews of the FYS series, two nice ones on Smashwords and a bit less glowing one for Mimsey’s Tale on Amazon.

I Fought the Claw & the Claw Won went to press towards the end of the month. Initial sales are not encouraging, given I sold two, and one of those was my copy. If sales don’t pick up in October I may reduce the price. $2.99 might be a bit much for a somewhat slim story.

Things to Do: With IFtC out, I’m able to work again on Shadow of Her Sins. Up to a bit over 6k words and four chapters. Hopefully I’ll be able to keep the pace up and get this out around Christmas time.

Summary: A definite WTF month. It seemed for a quite a while I was going to just get a single sale on everything except Mimsey's Tale, which I think got boosted a bit by Amazon's usual “If you bought this you might want to check out” spam mails. But things perked up a little in the last week with the usual furry suspects.

Things to Do: I Fought the Claw is done and at the beta-readers. Once it comes back it'll be published immediately. Got inspired to do a sequel to Shadow of the Red Vixen titled Shadow of Her Sins, focusing on Ali. Before that can be done I really need to finish the story I owe Waz for Mimsey's cover art.

Thought briefly about begging [livejournal.com profile] seawasp for a blurb to use for For Your Safety given he's complimented it in other journals, but decided that would be A) Tacky, B) Possibly put him in conflict with his publishers, which would not be good for a Real Author.

I suspect if I ever asked [livejournal.com profile] james_nicoll, his response would be along the lines of “If you want the existential despair of Jack Williamson's The Humanoids and the good natured recycling of Disney's Robin Hood this is the story for you.” ;p

Summary: A slightly better than average month, spiced up by the release of Mimsey’s Tale and a very unexpected six sales of The Dragon’s Companion, and nine of For Your of Safety for some odd reason. Usually I only get two or three at best.

Also, I had my first Canadian sale. Which was immediately reversed. Cheap socialist bastards. ;p

Things to Do: Working on a short story for Naziha to pay for the Mimsey’s Tale cover, then it’s back to grinding on I Fought the Claw.

From birth to death, they were built to serve us. Utterly loyal. That's how they're programmed after all.

In a world teetering on the edge of environmental disaster, a young girl receives a wonderful present, an anthromorph named Mimsey. Built to tutor and protect, Mimsey will follow Caroline, keeping the young girl from harm, and helping her learn about the world. A world that is about to change utterly, when the servants becomes the masters.

This short story is suitable for teens and up.

Mimsey's Tale, a short story set in the For Your Safety universe, is now available for purchase from Amazon and Smashwords for the low price of US$0.99!

This is the last bit I think. If anyone wants to beta-read send me a message via IM or my Sir Talen gmail account and I'll pass along a copy.

Mimsey does her best to protect. Whether it's wanted or not )

Here's what I've written the past couple of days. Slow writer is slow.

That awkward time in a teenager's life. )

Note: I see no reason why this shouldn't end peacefully...
jeriendhal: (Wazagan)
I'm currently re-formatting Mimsey's Tale to include some new material to expand it to a more salable length. Today: We get some hints about how bad the environment is.

Forests? What forests? )
